GUWAHATI | Congress MP Rakibul Hussain criticised former MP Pradyut Bordoloi and former bureaucrat Debashish Sharma, days after two Congress leaders from Assam’s Samaguri constituency quit the party. Addressing a press conference in Rupohihat, Hussain alleged that Bordoloi was reaching out to Con- gress workers and inducting people into his camp amid concerns over his own political position.

Hussain also questioned the Assam government’s ongoing campaign against alleged middlemen, alleging that ordinary people were being harassed in the name of the drive.He claimed that the involvement of “real middlemen” could be established by examining the call recordings of two MLAs. Hus- sain, however, did not provide details to substantiate the allegation. The Congress MP also targeted Sharma, alleging that the former bureaucrat had been frequently visit- ing the homes of people accused of being middlemen in Samaguri.

Hussain said he would file a case against Sharma over the matter.Hussain further alleged that Sharma, while serving as deputy commissioner of Nagaon, had facilitated the pushback of a Muslim woman to Bangladesh after she was declared a Bangladeshi national. According to Hussain, the Supreme Court later directed that the woman be brought back to India. The allegations come amid political tensions in Samaguri, where the exit of Congress leaders has triggered a fresh debate within the party over its organisational strength and leadership.
