Silchar: The Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has enforced a strict safety code for idol immersions at the town’s Sadarghat ghat, aiming to prevent mishaps and streamline the process. The initiative, led by newly appointed SMC Commissioner Srishti Singh, IAS, follows repeated cases of drowning reported in the area in recent years.

As per the new directive, immersions will only be permitted between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily. Exceptions will be made during Durga Puja and Kali Puja, when special arrangements are in place. Crucially, organizers must now obtain prior approval from the competent authority before proceeding with immersions, ensuring greater accountability. The order has come into effect immediately.

Highlighting the balance between tradition and safety, Commissioner Singh said, “The immersion ghat is not just a place of devotion, but also a space where the safety of citizens cannot be compromised. By introducing fixed timings and ensuring prior approval, we are creating a framework where faith and safety coexist.”

SMC officials noted that the move aligns with earlier recommendations from the Office of the District Commissioner, Cachar, which had called for stronger safety measures during idol immersions. Alongside, the civic body will also conduct awareness campaigns among puja committees and residents to ensure effective compliance.

The decision has been welcomed by many locals, who felt such regulation was long overdue. Several residents pointed out that the absence of clear rules in the past had led to unfortunate incidents at Sadarghat, and lauded the administration’s proactive stance to prevent further tragedies.

With this decisive measure, Commissioner Srishti Singh has made a firm beginning to her tenure, signaling that public welfare and citizen safety will remain at the heart of Silchar’s civic governance. Her action-oriented approach is being seen as a step towards a more responsive and people-centric administration.
