Agartala | The Tripura Legislative Assembly witnessed heated scenes on Monday after Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman alleged that a purported suicide note linked to the death of state DGP Anurag Dhankar had been removed and kept hidden.
The issue was raised on the final day of the ongoing Assembly session, shortly before Question Hour began. Roy Barman claimed that Dhankar’s wife, who arrived in Tripura on Sunday, had sought the note allegedly written by the police chief before his death.
“She arrived in Tripura yesterday and asked for the suicide note that was reportedly written by the DGP before his death,” Roy Barman said in the House, alleging that the note had been “removed and hidden”. The Congress MLA further claimed that Dhankar’s wife possessed a photograph of the alleged note and had sought access to the original.
The allegation immediately triggered an uproar in the House, with the Speaker intervening to stop Roy Barman from pursuing the matter. Speaker Rampada Jamatia said the issue could not be raised in the manner being attempted by the Congress legislator, pointing out that Chief Minister Manik Saha had already made statements on the matter twice.
“Being a senior leader, please do not confuse the people,” Jamatia said, asking Roy Barman to take his seat and citing Assembly rules. The Speaker’s intervention led to protests from Opposition members. Congress and CPI(M) MLAs entered the well of the House carrying placards and raised slogans over the alleged disappearance of the suicide note.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath stepped in and appealed to the Speaker to allow Question Hour to proceed, suggesting that the Opposition be given an opportunity to raise the matter separately thereafter. The protesting legislators subsequently returned to their seats and Assembly proceedings resumed.
The controversy comes amid questions surrounding the circumstances of Dhankar’s death. The latest allegation by the Opposition has added a fresh political dimension to the issue, with Congress seeking greater clarity over the alleged suicide note and its whereabouts.
The government has maintained its position on the matter, while the Speaker’s intervention on Monday prevented a detailed discussion on the allegation during Question Hour.
