Agartala | Mystery continues to surround the death of Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, who was found unconscious inside the bathroom of his office chamber at the Police Headquarters on Monday. As investigations begin and authorities await the post-mortem report, the Opposition has demanded a judicial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the senior IPS officer’s death.

According to officials, Dhankar was discovered unconscious inside the washroom attached to his office chamber and was immediately rushed to the state-run Govind Ballabh Pant (GB Pant) Hospital in Agartala. Despite extensive efforts by doctors to revive him, the state’s top police officer could not be saved.

Confirming the incident, senior physician Dr Pradip Bhowmik said Dhankar was brought to the emergency department in an unresponsive condition.

“On arrival, there was no pulse and no measurable blood pressure. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and all necessary life-saving measures were initiated immediately and continued for approximately 48 minutes. However, there was no response, and he was declared dead at 12:48 pm,” Dr Bhowmik told reporters.

The doctor said the precise cause of death would be known only after the completion of the post-mortem examination.”It was almost a brought-dead case. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and only the examination report will establish the exact cause of death,” he added.

The sudden death of the state’s police chief has triggered widespread speculation, particularly on social media. However, neither the Tripura government nor the state police has officially commented on the nature of the incident or confirmed any claims circulating online.

Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation until the medical examination and investigation are completed. Following the incident, the body was shifted to the hospital mortuary. Family members, including Dhankar’s son, were expected to arrive in Agartala before the mortal remains are taken to his hometown in Uttar Pradesh for the last rites.

Several senior officials rushed to the hospital after news of the incident emerged. Among those present were Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte, and West Tripura District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar. Chief Minister Manik Saha also visited the hospital to review the situation and meet officials.

Political leaders across party lines expressed shock over the sudden demise of the senior officer. Leader of Opposition Jitendra Choudhury and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar visited the hospital to pay their respects and seek information about the incident.

As questions mounted over the circumstances leading to Dhankar’s death, the CPI(M)-led Opposition called for an independent judicial probe. Describing Dhankar as one of the most upright and dedicated officers in the state’s police force, Choudhury said the incident warranted a thorough and impartial investigation.
