GUWAHATI | A delegation of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), led by Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Boro, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Parliament House on Wednesday and sought speedy implementation of the 2020 Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Accord, along with urgent measures to address recurring floods and erosion in the region.

The delegation included Rajya Sabha MP Rwngwra Narzary and Lok Sabha MP Jayanta Basumatary. During the meeting, the UPPL leaders urged the Centre to ensure timely implementation of all provisions of the BTR Accord, which was signed in 2020 under the guidance of Prime Minister Modi.

A key issue raised during the meeting was the proposed 125th Constitutional Amendment Bill. The UPPL delegation urged the Prime Minister to expedite the legislative process concerning the proposed amendments to provisions related to the Sixth Schedule and Article 280 of the Constitution.

The proposed changes are aimed at strengthening the administrative and financial powers of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), which governs the BTR.

The UPPL leaders also drew the Prime Minister’s attention to the persistent problem of floods and riverbank erosion in several parts of the BTR. They highlighted the impact of water flows from streams originating in Bhutan and sought appropriate long-term measures to address the recurring problem.

The delegation further requested a special initiative for flood-affected districts of Upper Assam, seeking targeted assistance and intervention for communities affected by inundation, erosion and displacement.

The meeting took place against the backdrop of continuing flood concerns across Assam, where several districts have been affected by heavy rainfall, rising river levels and erosion. The UPPL delegation stressed the need for sustained central intervention to strengthen flood-control infrastructure and provide relief to affected populations.
