The celebration of the Bohag Bihu festival was put on hold for the last two years at the Central Jail in Guwahati

Along with the rest part of the state of Assam, the inmates, as well as officials/ staff and their family members of the central Jail Guwahati, celebrated the Bohag Bihu on 24 April with pomp and gaiety under the leadership of Mr. Kalyan Choudhury, Jailor as President and Mohet Hojai inmate as General Secretary of the Bohag Bihu celebration committee 2022.

It may be stated that due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the celebration of the Bohag Bihu festival was put on hold for the last two years at the Central Jail in Guwahati.

The Culture Program was inaugurated by Chetona Das, an Assamese Film Actress with the lighting of the lamp. In her inaugural speech, she exhorted the inmates to live their life with fun and laughter.

Special Guests present in the program were Nabajyoti Sarma, AIG (Prisons), Mani Baruah, DIG, HQ (Retd) among shore dignitaries who delivered their valuable speeches. The winners of various sports competitions held on the occasion of Bohag Bihu were also presented the prizes by the Abhijit Baruah, CJM, Kamrup (M). The main attraction of the cultural program was Bidya Sagar, a renowned singer, and Sanskrita Malakar, an upcoming Singer who performed Songs varying from Assamese Bihu, Bodo Goalparia, and many more where the inmates were high on morale and spirit, keeping aside all their adversities.

Besides them, the invited cultural team from the Bodo community who came from BTR also performed Bodo dances and  Phukan Boro, Singer also of Bodo as well as Assamese. 

It may be stated that among inmates, staff, and family members Manipuri Folk Dance, Zeng-Bihu dance, Bihu, and Assamese modern songs were presented by the Gobinda Malakar, superintendent of central Jail Guwahati, Pradip Swargiary, Monoj Barman, Nilotpal Kakati (Asstt Jailor), Rakesh Kr. Paul and others.

The program ended with a vote of thanks offered by  Gobinda Madakar and the singing of the Assamese anthem by the Bohag Bihu celebration Committee, the source said.
