Amidst concern over the spread of Covid-19 due to an increasing number of people coming from other states, the district administration with the help of local supports has made elaborate arrangements to handle the situation.
Since the interstate transport was allowed on May 4 and railways started running special trains on May 12, altogether 3398 persons have reached the Bongaigaon district of Assam.

Under the project MILIJULI, an initiative by Bongaigaon district administration people has volunteered in managing the quarantine centers not only with the help of government support but also they have come forward to build huts of their own to keep people stranded in other states under institutional quarantine.

With the active supports of Mulagaon panchayat president and locals of the area in particular, 10 nos of huts with 10 nos of separate toilets have been built at Jhelkajhar village. Huts are basically made of bamboos contributed by the villagers.

The quarantine center was formally inaugurated on 14th June by Minister  Phani Bhusan Choudhury and in presence of DC Bongaigaon. Each hut has a bulb, fan and a bed and it is connected to a separate toilet and the compound has a boundary wall made of scrap materials.

Villagers have actively participated and offered shramdaan with the sole objective to keep their own people returning back to the village safe and comfortable, informed Minister and expresses sincere thanks for the villagers’ wholehearted cooperation.

When the returnees stay in these huts, we can ensure they follow strict quarantine rules as well as stay comfortable since they are our own people and they need our help in these times of crisis, informed villager. Villagers have also volunteered to guard the center at night.

This will be an example for other villages in the district and I appeal to all to follow in their footsteps and help their own people keep safe, informed DC. People’s participation in our fight against COVID-19 will also work as an antidote against the stigmatisation of the disease seen recently,  added DC.
