Thaosen lived a fearless life raising her voice against the atrocities of British rule

Celebrating the birth Anniversary of Segyajik Joya, Chief Executive Member, of Dima Hasao Autonomous Council, Debolal Gorlosa unveiled the statues of unsung Dimasa national freedom fighter Sengyajik Joya Thaosen near Synod Rotary and Dimasa princess Dishru near SE, PWD (R&B) office at Haflong town in presence of Assam Minister for Power, Sports & Youth Welfare, etc Nandita Gorlosa and council chairperson Ranu Langthasa on Thursday.

Following the unveiling of the statues, a public meeting was held with a huge gathering of around twelve thousand people from all the corners of Dima Hasao at N L Daulagupu Stadium. People came dressed in their traditional Dimasa attire with full zeal and excitement. Dimasa traditional dance was presented by 2000 women organized by the council Cultural and Publicity dept.

Addressing the public at the stadium, CEM Debolal Gorlosa expressed his happiness and said that there is nothing more important than love for one’s nation and one’s own roots. Loving one’s own tradition reinforces values of freedom, faith, integrity, responsibility, and values of oneness. Speaking at length about the greatness of the freedom fighter Joya Thaosen, he expressed his gratefulness and said that it is because of selfless people like Joya Thaosen who fought for the freedom movement, people in this district are living a peaceful life. Expressing his happiness about the opportunity to unveil the statue of Princess Dishru, he mentioned that the princess was the pioneer in Dimasa art of handloom weaving and it is because of her that the community is skilled in weaving beautiful traditional and artistic handloom designs.

Assam Minister Nandita Gorlosa spoke about the rich culture and tradition of the people of Dima Hasao. She said that traditions are ideas and beliefs passed down from one generation to the next. They’re not rules, but rather guidelines. Each family within a culture can have its own unique traditions while sharing other common ones. Thanking people for their tremendous responses, Minister Gorlosa said that it is overwhelming to see people from all over Dima Hasao under one roof to attend such a programme.

The installations of the two statues were long-standing demands by the people of Dima Hasao which were fulfilled and welcomed by people wholeheartedly. Sengyajik Joya Thaosen lived a fearless life raising her voice against the atrocities of British rule. At the young age of 19 years Joya Thaosen was shot dead by the British soldiers while on her way to join the Azad Hind fauz narrated Prof.Sorbojit Thaosen who briefed about the life history of the great and fearless freedom fighter. It is said that the beauty and skills of Princess Dishru was immeasurable during her times. This daughter of King Hariram Haflongbar is said to be a pioneer in handloom designs and patterns which is followed by the Dimasas even today. Dimasas believed that Princess Dishru was a Goddess in the form of a girl who came to this earth for a short while and made an unimaginable legendary story of the Dimasas.

Others who attended the programme were all the executive members of the council, members of the Autonomous Council, principal secretaries, district commissioners and officials.
