300 delegates attend the International Conference organised by CAU

Shillong: The Valedictory Programme for the International Conference on “Agriculture in Hilly and Mountain Landscape: An Interdisciplinary Perspective” was held on Friday at the College of Post Graduate Studies in Agricultural Sciences, Umiam, Meghalaya. Dignitaries of the programme were Dr. Anupam Mishra, Chairman and Vice Chancellor,  CAU(Imphal), Dr Dinesh Kumar Marothia, Chairman and President, ISAE, Mumbai; Dr. Tej Partap, Former Vice Chancellor, CSKHPAU and GBPUAT; Dr. S. Basanta Singh, Director Instruction, Dr. Lalita Mohan Garnayak, Director of Research, CAU(Imphal); Dr. B C Roy, Coordinator Working Group Cell and Dr. Ram Singh, Organizing Secretary, CPGS-AS.

While Dr. Mayank Rai, Dean of the College welcomed all the dignitaries and participants for the valedictory function, Dr.  B.C Roy presented the salient points and the deliberations from the technical sessions as Jhum cultivation is one of the important livelihoods of the people which has to be continued further with certain changes, agricultural education has to be incorporated in the school curriculum and niche products are to be promoted in the hilly and mountain areas.

Dr. Tej Pratap emphasized that researchers should start working on the area of ground shifting under the feet of Himalayan farmers.

Dr. Anupam Mishra highlighted the need for the assessment of the infrastructure in the hill and mountain region and the research issues for the underutilized vegetables and underutilized fruits have to be explored.

Awards were distributed for the best oral presentation as well as poster presentation.

Dr. Marothia discussed the importance of the interdisciplinary approach to address the different research issues and to address issues related to the inner layers of the hill and mountain ecosystem including all the components. Prof. Ram Singh delivered the vote of thanks.

In the three day conference, more than 300 delegates from India and foreign countries such as Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Phillippines, etc attended the conference.
