Assam Minister for Water Resources, Information & Public Relations, Social Justice and Empowerment, Pijush Hazarika, who is on a 3-day visit to Barak Valley arrived in Silchar and attended the function as the chief guest and distributed the Orunodoi Scheme cards at the Silchar Police Parade Ground here on Wednesday.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Hazarika said that in order to provide economic and nutritional security to women across the state, the Assam Govt.  a large number of initiatives have been taken.  Among them, foremost was the ‘Orunodoi ‘ scheme, which as its name suggests has literally become a beacon of hope for many.  He said the Orunodoi Scheme, launched in 2020, plans poverty alleviation and socio-economic inclusion of financially weaker households in the state through financial assistance by DBT so that disadvantaged households are assured of a minimum monthly cash flow.

The minister said another objective of the Orunodoi scheme is to reduce the multiplicity of schemes and consolidate them through the DBT platform with support for better delivery and results.  Permanent residents of Assam whose compound family income is less than 2 lakh per annum will benefit from this scheme.  The main attractive feature of Orunodoi is that its guidelines make its own way for the selection of beneficiaries by giving priority to people from different vulnerable sections of the society like divorced women, unmarried women, separated women, specially-abled persons etc.

The Finance Department ensures the rollout, implementation, and operational monitoring of the scheme and a District Level Monitoring Committee (DLMC) comprising District Commissioners and other elected representatives monitors the quality of implementation at the grassroots level.  Orunodoi is implemented through a state DBT portal capable of transferring monthly Orunodoi benefits to the bank accounts of beneficiaries with minimum human intervention.  These entire structures are created to embrace the poor and ensure that no one is discriminated against from the right to the scheme.

In the financial year 2020-21, 19 lakh women received direct deposits into their bank accounts on the 10th of every month.  Later, the Assam government increased the monthly benefit to 1000 from October 2021, and from October 2022 the beneficiaries are getting an additional Rs 250 as electricity subsidy.  In this way, 19 lakh families are being financially supported by Rs.1250 per month.

Orunodoi cards were distributed to 10 beneficiaries at the event. Earlier, Cachar District Commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha explained the purpose and the objectives of the occasion.

A total of 35 thousand 44 beneficiaries out of which fifty thousand are in Cachar,  a sum of 1250 rupees will be deposited in the account directly on the 10th of November.

District BJP president Bimalendu Roy, president Zilla Parishad, Amitabh Rai, CEO Zilla Parishad, Ranjit Lashkar, DDC  Rajeev Roy, and others were also present on the occasion.
