In a major geopolitical shift across the Arctic, the United States has reached a broad defense and security agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland. The pact establishes an expanded, long-term framework for American military security operations across the strategically critical autonomous territory.

The development was announced by Donald J. Trump, who framed the agreement as a permanent solution to long-standing U.S. security objectives in the Far North.

“The United States of America has entered into an Agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns,” Trump stated, characterising the arrangement as an “Infinite Life” pact with no expiration date.

Core Highlights of the Pact

• Exclusion of Foreign Adversaries: Under the terms outlined by the announcement, third-party adversaries are strictly barred from building military bases, maintaining troops, or acquiring stakes in critical infrastructure and sensitive mineral investments across Greenland without express written U.S. authorisation.

• Expanded Military Footprint: The framework clears the way for Washington to scale its defense assets beyond the existing Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base), enabling new joint infrastructure and logistical facilities.
• Sovereignty and Local Governance: While Washington highlighted extensive defense oversight, Danish and Greenlandic authorities reaffirmed that domestic governance, local autonomy, and Danish territorial integrity remain fully preserved under the Kingdom of Denmark, framing the treaty as a deep mutual defense partnership.
• Arctic Trade & Geopolitics: The agreement locks in NATO’s northern perimeter amid growing international contestation over Arctic maritime routes and unmined rare-earth reserves.

The bilateral framework is scheduled to be formalised during high-level diplomatic meetings alongside the upcoming United Nations General Assembly sessions.
