Silchar: In the wake of the recent arrest of an alleged fake doctor from Silchar’s historic Shiv Sundari Nari Sikshashram, local socio-political group Baraker Awaaz on Thursday demanded a stringent crackdown on unlicensed medical practitioners operating in the region.
A delegation from Baraker Awaaz submitted a memorandum to the Joint Director of Health Services, Cachar, calling for immediate inspection drives across all private nursing homes and clinics in the district. The organisation has also urged that every registered medical establishment be mandated to publicly display the list of authorised doctors employed there.
The recent arrest of Pulak Malakar, who was posing as a doctor at Shiv Sundari Nari Sikshashram, has sparked widespread concern across the Barak Valley. The incident has raised suspicions that more such fake practitioners may be operating in the district.

During their meeting with the Joint Director, the representatives of Baraker Awaaz demanded stringent legal action and a comprehensive verification drive. They expressed fears that several unqualified individuals may be endangering lives under the guise of medical professionals, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.
The delegation also urged the health department to arrange re-examinations of patients who underwent surgeries performed by the accused, Pulak Malakar.
In response, the Joint Director of Health Services reportedly assured the delegation that necessary steps would be taken without delay. He also committed to ensuring that every private healthcare facility in the district displays a list of qualified and licensed doctors to maintain transparency and accountability.
Those present on behalf of Baraker Awaaz included Krishna Kangshabanik, Ratul Bhattacharjee, Anup Deb, Manoj Kanti Das, Joydeep Dutta, Rudra Prasad Das, Jhankar Pal, and Soumitra Dutta Roy, among others.
