Silchar: In a major crackdown on suspected fertiliser smuggling along the Assam-Mizoram border, Lailapur Police on Tuesday seized two 12-wheeler trucks carrying more than 1,000 bags of urea allegedly concealed beneath consignments of food items.

Four persons, including two drivers and two helpers, were detained in connection with the case. The trucks, which were reportedly bound for Mizoram, were intercepted during a routine vehicle checking operation at the Lailapur Police Patrol Post on the Silchar-Aizawl National Highway.

Police suspect that the urea was being transported illegally after being hidden beneath food consignments to avoid detection. The seized trucks and fertiliser have been taken into custody, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the source, destination and those involved in the suspected smuggling network.
