Silchar: The sacred occasion of Kojagari Lakshmi Puja will be observed on Monday across Bengal and Barak Valley with deep devotion and enthusiasm. The festival, dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi—the symbol of wealth and prosperity—holds a special place in the Bengali calendar, coming close on the heels of Durga Puja.

According to the panjika (almanac), the Purnima Tithi begins at 11:24 a.m. on Monday and continues until 9:33 a.m. on Tuesday. On this full-moon night, devotees believe that Goddess Lakshmi descends to earth to bless those who remain awake in her honour. Families will perform the traditional Lakshmi Panchali at home, while others have invited priests to conduct the rituals.

As in previous years, homes and community pandals are decked with lights, flowers, and offerings. Markets across Silchar and neighbouring areas are witnessing heavy footfall. The Fatak Bazar, Tarapur Overbridge footpath, and Old Lakhipur Road areas are buzzing with shoppers picking up fruits, flowers, and ritual items.

Clay artisans (mritshilpis) have set up stalls displaying idols of Goddess Lakshmi, priced between Rs. 200 and Rs. 1,500, depending on size and craftsmanship. Vendors are also selling bundles of paddy stalks, turmeric, and ginger plants—traditional elements of the puja rituals.

Despite rising prices of essentials, devotees are determined to celebrate within their means. Artisans from Silchar and beyond, including some from Kolkata, have brought finely designed idols to meet the growing demand. The last two days have been especially busy for traders as preparations reach their peak.

For many middle-class families, the festive rush has brought some financial strain, but faith remains strong. As the moonlight of Kojagari Purnima bathes the night sky, the fragrance of incense and the sound of chants fill the air—marking another year of devotion, hope, and the enduring Bengali tradition of Lakshmi Puja.
