Police Attacked, Vehicle Damaged

Hailakandi: Tension gripped Hailakandi district on Sunday after a violent clash broke out between two families in Mohammapur Part I under Lala Police Station over the plucking of areca nuts. The situation turned chaotic when police personnel arriving to control the unrest were allegedly attacked by locals, leaving a police driver injured and a vehicle damaged.
According to local sources, the dispute began as a verbal altercation between two families over the right to collect areca nuts from trees. Within moments, the argument escalated into a full-blown physical fight, prompting nearby residents to alert the police.
A large police team from the Abdullahpur Outpost reached the spot to bring the situation under control. However, moments after their arrival, a group of individuals reportedly launched an attack on the police, pelting stones and vandalizing their vehicle. The windshield of the vehicle was shattered, and the driver sustained injuries during the assault.
The injured driver was immediately rushed to Lala Primary Health Centre for medical attention.
Following the attack, panic spread through the area. Additional police forces were deployed from Hailakandi to restore order. As part of the crackdown, police detained around ten women and three men for their suspected involvement in the attack.
By late evening, a tense calm prevailed in the village as security forces carried out door-to-door searches to identify others involved and prevent any further escalation.
Police officials confirmed that the situation is under control but added that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact sequence of events and identify all those responsible for the assault.
The incident has sparked concern across Hailakandi, with locals demanding strict action against those who attacked the police and disturbed public peace.
