Aizawl: Mizoram has been honoured with a national award for outstanding traffic management at the 18th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference held in Gurugram, Haryana, officials said on Tuesday.
State Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Secretary Lalmalsawma Pachuau received the award from Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal and Minister of State Tokhan Sahu during the event’s valedictory session.
The recognition highlights Mizoram’s innovative approach to traffic management, effective coordination among departments, and the civic discipline of its residents all of which contribute to smooth vehicular movement across the state.
The Town and Country Planning Wing of the UD&PA Department represented Mizoram at the national forum, where it made a detailed presentation before the jury on October 16. The state’s traffic management model was showcased through a video and PowerPoint presentation, outlining its systematic strategies and citizen participation in maintaining order on the roads.
Aizawl, often called the “Silent City,” has become a model of urban discipline, known for its calm, honk-free traffic. Motorists follow a self-regulated system four-wheelers keep to the left, two-wheelers to the right, and overtaking is minimal ensuring an orderly flow of vehicles even on the city’s narrow and winding roads.
Dedicating the award to the people of Mizoram, the state government said it reflects the collective civic sense and cooperation of its citizens. Officials noted that the honour reinforces earlier appreciation from former President Ram Nath Kovind, who had lauded Mizoram’s exemplary traffic discipline during his visit to the state.
