Silchar: The skies over Kumbhirgram Air Force Station turned into a theatre of power and precision on Saturday as the Indian Air Force’s famed Sarang Helicopter Display Team delivered a stunning aerobatic performance, drawing thousands of spectators from Silchar and across South Assam. Among them was a strong contingent of more than 100 students from Assam University, who returned with both awe and ambition.

The group included NCC cadets and students from multiple departments, led by Dr Deepjyoti Choudhury of the Department of Business Administration and Dr Sangharsh Mishra of the Department of Law.

They were assisted by Dr Joyashri Dey from Social Work. Arijit Goswami, convenor of the Assam University Armed Forces Museum, coordinated the visit and liaison with Air Force authorities.

This was the first full-scale aerobatic display in the region in over three decades. The Sarang team’s five indigenous Advanced Light Helicopters sliced across the sky in tight formations, loops, and crossovers, showcasing both the skill of the pilots and the strength of India’s own HAL-built aircraft.

The airshow, however, wasn’t just about what happened in the air. The students explored ground exhibits featuring radar systems, aircraft safety gear, technical equipment, and weaponry. Many described it as their first close look at the technology that powers India’s defence capabilities.

The most stirring moments came from the conversations the students had with IAF personnel. Female officers, in particular, drew crowds of young aspirants. They chatted with students, signed notebooks, and offered encouragement that left a visible mark on the NCC cadets and others considering a career in uniform.

“The kind of response we got from all the students, NCC cadets, and even visitors from Silchar and nearby places was our pleasure,” said Flight Lieutenant Pallavi Sangwan, who led several formations during the show. She also pointed out that the Sarang team is the only military helicopter display team of its kind in the world, and that all five helicopters showcased are indigenous ALH platforms, reinforcing the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

By the end of the visit, the excitement was palpable. The exhibits on aircraft mechanisms and safety systems sparked curiosity, while the interactions with pilots and officers lit a fresh resolve among many to explore careers in the armed forces.

As the students left Kumbhirgram Air Force Station, they carried more than photographs and memories. For many, it was the first time the idea of joining the forces felt real. The sky didn’t just look spectacular that afternoon. It looked attainable.
