Silchar: Silchar’s long-pending demand to rename its railway station after the language martyrs reached the national stage on Tuesday (December 9). During Zero Hour in the Winter Session of Parliament, Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha raised the issue and pressed for the long-awaited gazette notification to formalise the name “Bhasha Shahid Station.”
Purkayastha described the renaming as a matter of historical justice and collective memory, reminding the House that the 1961 language martyrs remain central to Barak Valley’s cultural and emotional identity. He urged the Union government to intervene so that the commitment made to the people of Silchar is finally carried out.
Local groups campaigning for the name change welcomed the move and said it adds fresh momentum to their demand. They expect clarity once full details of the parliamentary discussion emerge.
For now, Silchar waits to see whether the Centre’s attention will push the long-delayed process toward a final decision.
