New Delhi : General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), said on Tuesday that the security situation in Manipur and the broader Northeast improved markedly in 2025 due to neutral, transparent, and decisive actions by security forces, complemented by proactive government initiatives.
Speaking at the Indian Army’s annual press conference ahead of the 78th Army Day, Gen. Dwivedi highlighted measures taken to shield the northeastern region from the turbulence in neighbouring Myanmar. “In response to turbulence in Myanmar, a comprehensive multi-agency security grid comprising the Assam Rifles, Army, and the Ministry of Home Affairs is working to insulate the Northeast from spillover effects,” he said.
The Army Chief noted that several developments contributed to stability in Manipur last year, including the peaceful conduct of the Durand Cup football tournament, the resumption of cultural festivals, and the renewal of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki insurgent groups in September 2025. “These have been key markers of stability,” he added.
He further observed that the successful completion of phase two elections in Myanmar opens the door for stronger and more effective India-Myanmar engagement, enhancing cross-border coordination on security and development matters.
Gen. Dwivedi also stated that the northern and northwestern borders remain stable and under firm control, while urging continued vigilance. Turning to Jammu and Kashmir, he noted a positive shift in 2025, with the “theme of terrorism to tourism gradually taking shape.” Security forces eliminated 31 terrorists last year, 65% of whom were of Pakistani origin, including those involved in the Pahalgam terror attack.
The Army Chief’s remarks underscore ongoing efforts to maintain security, foster regional stability, and strengthen bilateral cooperation with Myanmar, while highlighting tangible improvements in the internal situation of the Northeast and other sensitive regions.
