Borkhola: Assam Cabinet Minister Kaushik Rai participated in the auspicious foundation stone-laying ceremony for a new school building at the recently upgraded 48 No. Mechipur Tea Garden Primary School (now transitioning to an upper primary school) in Borkhola Legislative Assembly constituency, under Tapang Block, on Sunday.
The event marked a significant milestone under the Prime Minister’s Tea Workers Encouragement Scheme (Pradhan Mantri Cha Shramik Protsahan Yojana), with an approved funding of Rs.35.28 lakh dedicated to constructing the new school infrastructure. This initiative aims to enhance educational facilities in tea garden areas, benefiting children from tea worker families.

In his address, Minister Rai highlighted the transformative impact of the scheme and credited the visionary leadership of Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for prioritizing education in tea garden communities. “It is thanks to the farsighted leadership and education-friendly vision of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma that improvements in the quality of education in tea garden areas are becoming possible,” Rai stated. “This will open new horizons for our students, paving the way for a bright future.”
The project is part of broader efforts by the Assam government to uplift education standards in remote tea estate regions of Barak Valley and beyond, ensuring better access to quality schooling for tea garden children. The new building is expected to support the school’s upgrade and accommodate growing student needs in the area.
Local residents and tea garden workers welcomed the development as a step toward empowering the next generation through improved educational opportunities.
