Guwahati: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate rainfall and thunderstorms across large parts of Assam over the next five days, warning of possible localised flooding, lightning and gusty winds.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Guwahati, the weather activity is expected to increase between March 12 and March 17 due to an upper-air cyclonic circulation over central Assam along with associated trough systems.

The IMD said moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at many places across the state during this period. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of around 30 to 40 kmph are also expected. Isolated places may receive heavy rainfall.

The department has cautioned that strong winds and intense downpours could disrupt power supply, affect road travel and cause waterlogging in some areas.

At present, daytime temperatures across Assam are slightly above normal, ranging between 31°C and 33.4°C. Night temperatures are also higher than the seasonal average, hovering between 18°C and 22°C.

Meteorologists said rainfall activity may intensify in the coming days, with precipitation likely at most places across the state. Wind speeds during thunderstorms could increase to 40 to 50 kmph, while heavy rain may occur at isolated locations.

District-wise assessment suggests stronger rainfall activity in western and central parts of Assam. Areas such as Kamrup Metropolitan, Kamrup, Nagaon, Barpeta and Goalpara districts are expected to experience fairly widespread rainfall initially, which may gradually reduce to isolated showers around March 18.

Residents have been advised to remain alert during thunderstorms and avoid open areas during lightning. Authorities also urged people to take necessary precautions while travelling during periods of heavy rain and strong winds.
