Guwahati: With the Assembly elections approaching, tensions over candidate selection have begun to surface in the 28-Boko-Chaygaon (ST) Legislative Assembly Constituency, as signs of dissent emerge from sections that have traditionally supported the ruling alliance.
The Indian National Congress has already announced former All Rabha Students’ Union president Ramen Singh Rabha as its candidate for the seat.
However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is yet to finalise its nominee for the constituency, leading to growing speculation and unease among local groups.
Amid the delay, several Rabha organisations under the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, which have largely been considered supportive of the ruling dispensation, have expressed dissatisfaction over the BJP’s approach to candidate selection.
Concerned about political representation, multiple Rabha groups from Kamrup district recently held a closed-door meeting in Boko to discuss the issue and chalk out their strategy ahead of the polls.
Political observers say the development could influence the dynamics in the constituency if the concerns raised by the Rabha organisations are not addressed in the coming days.
