GUWAHATI: Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday accused the Congress of being “anti-women” after Congress legislators briefly walked out of the Assam Assembly during a discussion on a government resolution supporting 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and state legislative assemblies.

The resolution was moved by Assam Women and Child Welfare Minister Ajanta Neog. It urged the immediate implementation of one-third reservation for women in Parliament and all state legislative assemblies after completion of the Delimitation in India process.

The walkout took place while the Chief Minister was speaking on the resolution. Congress legislators, along with members of Raijor Dal, protested remarks made against the Congress by BJP MLA Bhuban Pegu during the debate.

Despite the protest, Congress legislators later returned to the House before the resolution was passed through a voice vote.

Speaking during the discussion, Sarma alleged that the Congress had historically opposed measures aimed at empowering women politically. He said the ruling BJP government was committed to ensuring greater participation of women in the democratic process.

The resolution comes amid a wider national debate over the implementation of women’s reservation, which has been linked to the completion of the delimitation exercise.
