Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia has announced a nationwide ban on social media accounts for children under the age of 16, introducing one of the region’s most stringent measures aimed at enhancing online safety for minors.
Under the new regulation, social media platforms operating in the country will be required to prevent users below 16 years of age from creating or maintaining accounts. Authorities have warned that companies failing to comply with the rules could face regulatory action and penalties.

The Malaysian government said the policy is designed to protect children from cyberbullying, online predators, harmful content, and the mental health risks linked to excessive social media use. Officials noted that stronger safeguards have become necessary as increasing numbers of children gain access to smartphones and digital platforms at younger ages.
According to the government, the initiative is part of broader efforts to create a safer online environment for young users and to ensure that technology companies take greater responsibility for child protection.
The decision has triggered public debate. Supporters have welcomed the move, arguing that stricter controls are needed to shield children from online dangers and reduce exposure to harmful content. Critics, however, have raised concerns about how the restrictions will be enforced and whether age-verification systems can effectively prevent underage users from accessing social media platforms.
Malaysia is expected to work closely with technology companies in the coming months to implement the new rules and establish mechanisms for compliance.
The move places Malaysia among a growing number of countries exploring tougher regulations on children’s access to social media amid increasing global concerns over digital safety and youth well-being.
