Guwahati: In a major step towards improving access to justice, Assam Law Minister Susanta Borgohain on Monday announced in the Assam Legislative Assembly that benches of the Gauhati High Court will be established in Dibrugarh and Barak Valley. The decision is expected to benefit litigants, lawyers, and residents of Upper Assam and the Barak Valley region.
The announcement fulfils a long-standing demand, particularly from Barak Valley, where lawyers, political parties, civil society organisations, and residents have been seeking a permanent High Court bench for decades. At present, people from the region have to travel nearly 300 kilometres to Guwahati for court proceedings, resulting in additional expenses and delays.
The proposed benches are expected to make the justice delivery system more accessible and reduce the burden on litigants by bringing judicial services closer to the people. The move is also seen as a significant boost to the state’s legal infrastructure and judicial administration.
