Silchar | Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia   reviewed the party’s preparedness for the maiden Silchar Municipal Corporation election and said development of the city would remain at the centre of its campaign. Saikia arrived in Silchar to interact with party leaders and grassroots workers and assess preparations for the upcoming civic polls.

“We have primarily come here to discuss the election and review our preparations. We will interact with our leaders and workers and deliberate on the steps required to take the party’s campaign forward,” he told reporters. The BJP state president said the government had undertaken several initiatives for Silchar and that more development projects were in the pipeline.

He said the party’s focus would be on the development and welfare of all sections of the city’s population. “Our goal is to ensure the progress and welfare of people belonging to all sections of society. We want Silchar to grow as a developed, secure and inclusive city,” Saikia said.

Saikia described the election as a significant milestone in Silchar’s civic history, as residents would elect representatives to the Municipal Corporation for the first time following the upgradation of the city’s civic body. He also appealed to voters to participate in the election and exercise their franchise.

The BJP state president was accompanied by party central observer and organisational leader G R Ravindra Raju. Minister Kaushik Rai, Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya, Rajya Sabha MPs Kanad Purkayastha and Sushmita Dev, Silchar MLA Rajdeep Roy, Udharbond MLA Rajdeep Goala and BJP district president Rupam Saha were also present.

The visit comes as the BJP steps up its organisational activities ahead of the civic election. Party leaders are holding consultations with local functionaries and workers and working on ward-level strategies.The nomination process for the election is currently underway, with candidate selection expected to be a key focus of the party’s organisational exercise in the coming days.The Silchar Municipal Corporation has 42 wards and more than 2.70 lakh registered voters.

Polling for the first Municipal Corporation election is scheduled for October 3, while counting of votes will be held on October 6.
