Aizawl | One year after its inauguration, the Bairabi-Sairang railway line has emerged as a major transport and logistics gateway for Mizoram, expanding passenger connectivity, freight movement, tourism and access to markets.

The 51.38-km line and Sairang railway station were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, bringing the national railway network to the doorstep of Aizawl after decades of heavy dependence on road transport.

Built across Mizoram’s difficult hill terrain, the corridor includes 153 bridges, 45 tunnels stretching nearly 16 km and six bridges rising more than 70 metres, with the tallest reaching 114 metres. It connects Bairabi in Assam with Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang.

More than 15 lakh passengers in a year

The line has significantly expanded Mizoram’s rail connectivity, with services now linking Sairang with Guwahati, Kolkata and Delhi. The Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express has provided the state with its first direct premium train service to the national capital.

The Sairang-Silchar passenger service, inaugurated by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in January 2026, has also established a regular link with Assam’s Barak Valley. More than 1,100 train trips have been completed during the first year, carrying over 15 lakh passengers. Railway officials said demand has remained strong, with services operating at more than 100 per cent occupancy on average.

The Sairang-Kolkata service has recorded average occupancy of more than 140 per cent, while the daily Sairang-Guwahati service has remained above 110 per cent. The Rajdhani Express has recorded average occupancy of over 145 per cent. Passenger services generated about Rs 54 crore in ticket revenue during the year.

Sairang station alone handled more than 5.54 lakh passenger movements, with average daily footfall of around 3,300.

Rail freight reshapes supply chains

The impact has extended beyond passenger movement. The railway has created an alternative channel for transporting cement, construction materials, foodgrains, fertilisers and automobiles to Mizoram. The first freight train reached Sairang on September 14, 2025, carrying more than 26,000 bags of cement from the Star Cement siding at Tetelia near Guwahati. The arrival demonstrated the potential of rail transport to reduce freight costs and improve the availability of essential construction material in Aizawl.

In December 2025, the first automobile consignment reached Sairang, carrying 119 Maruti cars from Changsari near Guwahati. More than 2,500 freight wagons have been delivered at Sairang during the first year, with around 70 per cent carrying construction materials such as cement, stone and sand.

The freight movement has also included rice and fertilisers, while 156 wagons have been used for automobile transportation. The shift of bulk cargo from long road journeys to rail has created a higher-capacity supply route for essential commodities and vehicles.

Tourism and education gain from connectivity

The new rail link has also made Mizoram more accessible to travellers from Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati and Silchar. The availability of an affordable rail option is expected to support hotels, homestays, restaurants, taxis, tour operators, guides and local markets. It has also made it easier for the state to host educational, sporting, cultural and official events involving participants from outside Mizoram.

For students, direct rail services have improved access to universities, professional institutions, coaching centres, examinations and academic events in other parts of the country. According to the information provided by railway authorities, tourism in Mizoram has increased by more than 86 per cent since the introduction of rail connectivity.

Local products find a route to national markets

The railway has also opened new possibilities for local enterprises, particularly in handloom, bamboo, cane, handicrafts and agricultural products. The first parcel consignment from Sairang was booked on September 19, 2025, carrying Anthurium flowers to Delhi through the parcel van of the Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express.

The service offers local producers a direct route for transporting high-value and time-sensitive products to markets outside the state.

From connectivity to opportunity

The first year of the Bairabi-Sairang railway has demonstrated the wider economic significance of rail connectivity for a geographically challenging state. Passengers now have direct links to major cities, traders can move bulk consignments more efficiently, construction materials can reach markets faster, and local producers have new avenues to reach consumers beyond Mizoram.

What began as an ambitious railway project through difficult terrain is increasingly becoming a broader economic lifeline – reducing travel barriers, strengthening supply chains and giving Mizoram a more direct connection to the national market.
