Silchar | Tension prevailed in Assam’s Silchar on Thursday as protesters staged a demonstration outside the District Sports Association (DSA), accusing some newly elected councillors of the Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) of using forged certificates to contest and win the municipal elections.

The protest coincided with the scheduled oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected councillors. Demonstrators alleged that several candidates had secured electoral victories by submitting fake certificates and questioned the administration’s failure to take action despite complaints over the alleged irregularities.

Demanding an investigation and action against the councillors concerned, the protesters assembled outside the DSA and planned to march towards the venue of the oath-taking ceremony. However, police personnel stopped them from proceeding further, preventing the demonstrators from reaching the ceremony venue.

The police intervention led to a heated exchange between the protesters and security personnel, with the demonstrators expressing resentment over being denied access to the venue. The situation remained tense outside the DSA for some time as protesters continued to press for action over the alleged use of forged documents in the municipal elections.

The allegations are yet to be independently established, and further details regarding the administration’s response were not immediately available.
