Mridul Kumar Das, Additional Secretary of the Home and Political departments, and Monjit Kr Das, Assistant Inspector General of Registration, Assam, are also members of the committee. Tapash Gupta, Deputy Secretary of the Home and Political Department, will serve as its member-secretary.

The committee has been constituted in accordance with the state government’s decision to prepare a regulatory framework for implementing the UCC legislation.

The UCC Bill, 2026, was passed by the Assam Legislative Assembly in May. Following its passage, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had announced that the Bill would be sent to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya for approval before being forwarded to President Droupadi Murmu for her assent.

The legislation has since been sent to the Centre for the President’s assent. Its implementation will depend on the completion of the required constitutional formalities. Describing the passage of the Bill as a historic development, Sarma had thanked members of the Assembly for supporting the legislation.

The formation of the committee is expected to facilitate the preparation of detailed rules governing the implementation of the proposed UCC framework in the state. You’re using the free version of ChatGPT. Upgrade for advanced models, better memory, and higher-quality image creation.
