Katigorah : In yet another incident that has raised eyebrows in the Katigorah region of Cachar district, a couple along with five minor children were detained by locals and Village Defence Party (VDP) members near Hilara on suspicion of being Rohingya nationals.
According to sources, the group had arrived at Hilara Railway Station and hired an autorickshaw, reportedly heading towards Kalain. However, inconsistencies in their speech and behaviour reportedly raised suspicion among local residents, who intercepted the group and immediately informed the police.
Katigorah police responded swiftly and took the couple and the five minors into custody. The autorickshaw used for the journey, bearing registration number AS 10/BC/0339, was also seized by the authorities.
The detainees were subsequently taken to Silchar for further questioning and verification. Police officials have so far refrained from disclosing any concrete information regarding their identity or nationality, pending investigation.
This incident adds to a growing list of similar detentions in the Katigorah area in recent months, prompting speculation about the possible involvement of an organised network facilitating the movement of illegal migrants.
Authorities are now probing whether a local nexus is aiding such infiltrations by helping them reach perceived safe havens.
The detained individuals have reportedly claimed that they came from Delhi, but they have refused to reveal their intended destination or purpose of travel.
With repeated detentions being reported in the region, security agencies are on high alert and further inquiries are underway to ascertain the background and movement patterns of the individuals involved.
