Silchar: A three-day commemorative programme in honour of language martyrs Jagan and Jishu begins today, organised by the Cachar district committee of the Barak Valley Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sammelan.
The programme will open at 4:30 PM with the Shaheed Sudeshna Sinha Memorial Lecture. Dr. Dipendu Das, professor at Assam University, will deliver the lecture, focusing on the sacrifice of the language martyrs and the legacy of the movement.
Chandrakanta Sinha, retired IRS officer and advisor to the Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha, will attend the inaugural session as chief guest. Swapan Kumar Sinha, general secretary of the Mahasabha, will be present as special guest.
The second day, July 20, will feature a student quiz competition on the history and significance of the language movement. The event, scheduled to begin at 10:30 AM, is aimed at students of Classes VIII, IX, and X to instill a sense of linguistic pride and awareness among the younger generation.
On the concluding day, July 21, all regional units of the Sammelan will come together to pay collective homage to the language martyrs through a memorial event.
District secretary Uttam Kumar Saha has extended a warm invitation to all language lovers and cultural enthusiasts to take part in the programme and honour the enduring legacy of the language movement.
