SILCHAR: The BJP registered a major victory in the first-ever Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) election, winning 32 of the 42 wards. With its alliance partner AGP securing two wards, the BJP-led alliance has won a total of 34 wards and secured a clear majority in the civic body.

Counting of votes was held on Tuesday amid tight security arrangements. The final results showed a strong mandate for the BJP-led alliance.

The BJP won 32 wards on its own, while AGP secured victories in two wards. Independent candidates won six wards, while the Congress managed to win only two wards.

Among the BJP winners, Bijendra Prasad Singh from Ward No. 9 and Bhakti Sen Talukdar from Ward No. 20 had already been elected unopposed before the polling.

The Congress’s victory in only two wards has triggered discussions in political circles, with the party facing a major setback in the first SMC election.

With the BJP-AGP alliance securing 34 of the 42 wards, the formation of the first board of the Silchar Municipal Corporation is now virtually certain. The new civic body is expected to focus on improving urban infrastructure and strengthening civic services in Silchar.
