GUWAHATI | Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on June 25 said that nearly 17 per cent of households in the state that have installed rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar scheme are now paying zero electricity bills, highlighting the growing impact of the Centre’s flagship renewable energy programme.
Sharing the update on social media, Sarma said the initiative has significantly reduced electricity expenses for thousands of families while advancing Assam’s transition towards clean and sustainable energy.
The Chief Minister noted that Assam is currently among the top five states in the country in the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar scheme, which encourages households to adopt rooftop solar power through financial assistance and incentives.

“Seventeen per cent of Assam’s solar households have paid zero electricity bills. This is the transformation which PM Surya Ghar has brought about in Assam,” Sarma said.
According to the Chief Minister, the scheme is not only easing the financial burden on consumers but also strengthening the state’s energy security by promoting decentralised power generation and reducing dependence on conventional sources of electricity.
The PM Surya Ghar programme aims to accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar systems across residential households, enabling consumers to generate their own power and lower monthly electricity costs. Beneficiaries receive subsidies and support for installing solar panels, making renewable energy more accessible and affordable.
Assam has been actively pushing the scheme as part of its broader renewable energy strategy. State authorities believe increased rooftop solar adoption will contribute to long-term economic savings for households while supporting environmental sustainability and clean energy goals.
The latest figures underscore the growing acceptance of solar energy in the state, with a significant number of households already reaping financial benefits from the initiative. The government expects participation in the scheme to rise further as awareness and infrastructure support continue to expand across Assam.
