Imphal : A staggering 1,700 bags, each weighing 100 kilograms of Areca Nuts (Supari) worth approximately Rs. 20.40 Crore in the international markets have been recovered after being impounded 7 trucks along the Manipur Myanmar border during the past 24 hours, a defense wing statement said here on Thursday.

Acting on credible intelligence regarding the illicit movement of contraband items along the Indo-Myanmar border, a team from Assam Rifles initiated a meticulously planned operation to establish control over the suspected area. The illegal items were discovered to be illicitly transported in seven trucks.

This smuggling operation was intercepted in the general vicinity of Phaikoh village, near Border Post-102 (RN 039796) Kamjong district of Manipur bordering Myanmar on the east, as it attempted to cross the international border into Indian territory.

Subsequently, all seized Areca Nuts, along with the apprehended individuals and the trucks used for smuggling, were handed over to the Forest Department in Kamjong on September 6, 2023, to facilitate further legal proceedings.
