Guwahati | Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced the launch of an Assam Bamboo Cycle, a bamboo-framed bicycle aimed at promoting sustainable mobility and value addition to the state’s bamboo resources. The bicycle will be showcased at the Brahmaputra Riverfront in Guwahati from October 2, with members of the public and cycling enthusiasts invited to take part in test rides, Sarma said.

“Assam’s bamboo story is ready to roll,” the chief minister said in a post on X, linking the initiative to efforts to promote innovation and expand opportunities in the bamboo economy. Sarma also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to classify bamboo as grass under the law with opening up new opportunities for livelihoods and green industries.

The initiative is intended to demonstrate how bamboo can be used in contemporary products while encouraging greater value addition to a resource widely available across Assam and the Northeast. The public showcase will allow visitors to see the bicycle and experience its bamboo-based frame from October 2 at the riverfront.
