The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for several northeastern states, with Assam and Meghalaya expected to bear the brunt of the impending monsoon showers.

Starting today, Monday, May 6, widespread rain with heavy falls and thunderstorms are forecast across Meghalaya and Assam.

This wet weather pattern is expected to persist for the next seven days, with strong southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal further fueling the downpours.

The IMD predicted fairly widespread rain and thunderstorms across Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim.

Additionally, isolated to scattered rain and thunderstorms are likely in other parts of India, including Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and several southern states.

Despite the heavy rains, daytime temperatures are still expected to soar above 40°C in some areas of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and several southern states.

The IMD’s forecast suggests a heightened risk of flooding in Gangetic West Bengal on May 6 and 7, and Odisha on May 7 and 8.

Residents in these areas are advised to stay vigilant and follow official advisories.

The IMD’s 5-day forecast predicts continued rainfall activity across the region.

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura can expect fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.

Similar weather is expected in Gangetic West Bengal for the next two days, with scattered to fairly widespread rainfall likely to spread to East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, and Odisha in the coming days.
