Announces Key Road and Bridge Projects
KRC TIMES Assam Bureau
Guwahati | The Assam government has announced an ambitious infrastructure package worth Rs 17,235 crore, aimed at transforming road connectivity and strengthening transport networks across the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the proposed investment would drive one of the largest connectivity expansion programmes undertaken in Assam in recent years.
Sharing details of the initiative on social media platform X, Sarma described the package as “one of the most ambitious connectivity overhauls in Assam till date,” emphasizing its potential to accelerate economic growth and improve mobility across regions.
The infrastructure push includes the four-laning of the Baihata Chariali-Mission Chariali corridor, a key route connecting central and upper Assam. The project is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve road safety and significantly reduce travel time for commuters and freight movement.

Another major component of the package is the proposed Guwahati Airport-Jalukbari Elevated Corridor, which aims to provide faster and smoother access to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. The elevated roadway is expected to address traffic bottlenecks along one of the busiest stretches in the state capital and improve connectivity for air travellers.
The government has also proposed the construction of a new bridge over the Brahmaputra River linking Morigaon and Darrang districts. The bridge is expected to create a crucial transport link between the northern and southern banks of the river, enhancing accessibility, facilitating trade and reducing travel distances for thousands of residents.
According to the Chief Minister, the projects are designed to strengthen regional connectivity, improve transportation efficiency and support Assam’s long-term development goals.
The announcement comes amid the state government’s continued focus on infrastructure development as a key driver of economic growth. In recent years, Assam has undertaken several major road, bridge and urban transport projects aimed at improving connectivity within the state and with the wider Northeast region.
Officials believe the latest investment package will not only boost transportation networks but also create employment opportunities during construction and contribute to increased commercial activity across multiple districts.Once implemented, the projects are expected to play a significant role in enhancing connectivity between major urban centres, industrial hubs and rural areas, further integrating Assam’s transportation landscape.
