Silchar Administration Removes Encroachments Near Sunlight Hospital to Boost Flood Mitigation Efforts

KRC TIMES Barak Valley Bureau

Silchar: In a coordinated effort to strengthen flood mitigation measures and improve urban drainage infrastructure, an eviction drive was successfully carried out on Ashram Road near Sunlight Hospital in Silchar on Saturday.

The operation was led by the Circle Officer of Silchar Sadar Revenue Circle and conducted with the support of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Cachar, the Water Resources Department, PWD (Roads), and Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL).

During the drive, encroachments on government land were removed to facilitate the smooth movement and deployment of heavy machinery engaged in the ongoing cleaning and restoration of the Rangirkhal and Longaikhal drainage channels.

Officials stated that the clearance of the encroached area will significantly expedite desilting and restoration work in the two important channels.

The initiative is expected to enhance the water-carrying capacity of the drains, thereby improving the area’s drainage system and reducing the risk of waterlogging and flooding during the monsoon season.

The administration said that restoring the natural flow of the channels remains a key priority in its broader strategy to strengthen flood management and urban resilience across Silchar and adjoining areas.

The eviction drive forms part of ongoing efforts by the district administration and allied departments to ensure the timely completion of drainage restoration projects ahead of the peak monsoon period.
