Guwahati | The railway corridor connecting Guwahati with Delhi will be expanded to four tracks, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, describing the proposed upgrade as a major boost to passenger and freight connectivity in the region.

Sarma said work was progressing rapidly on plans to convert seven railway routes across the country into four-track corridors. The expansion of the Guwahati-Delhi route is expected to increase the capacity of the network and facilitate the movement of more passenger and freight trains.

The Chief Minister also said construction of a second railway bridge over the Brahmaputra at Saraighat is expected to begin soon. The additional bridge, along with the expansion of the rail corridor, is expected to strengthen Assam’s connectivity with the national capital and other parts of the country.

According to Sarma, the increase in passenger and freight train services would be possible after the completion of certain formalities. The proposed infrastructure expansion comes amid efforts to strengthen Assam’s rail network and improve transportation capacity to meet growing passenger demand and facilitate faster movement of goods.

The four-track connectivity between Guwahati and Delhi is expected to provide greater operational flexibility for the Railways while improving the overall efficiency of one of the key rail links connecting the Northeast with the rest of the country.
