SILCHAR: The president of Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha for Assam and the Northeast Biswadeep Gupta has demanded a high-level probe in connection with the murder of a 16-year-old youth of Karimganj district’s Lowairpua and a Bajrang Dal activist Sambhu Koiri, who was killed allegedly by a youth of a different religion earlier this month.

The deceased Sambhu Koiri (son of Madhu Koiri of Lowairpua) was attacked by Anamul Haque alias Salim (son of Monai Miya of Lowairpua) with a sharp weapon in Lowairpua on the evening of January 8 reportedly to take revenge of an issue of the past. Sambhu, who was returning to his home after attending a programme in Hailakandi, suffered critical injuries and started bleeding profusely after he was hit by Anamul with the sharp weapon. Onlookers immediately gathered at the spot after the incident and rushed Sambhu to the Makunda Christian Leprosy and General Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

After the news of Sambhu’s death spread, locals of the area went berserk and came out on the streets registering their protest. At least 12 shops in the Lowairpua bus stand area and the attacker’s (Anamul’s) house were vandalised. In view of the situation, the district administration had imposed Section 144, CrPC in that area to prevent spiralling of the violence.

Speaking about the matter on Friday, Biswadeep Gupta, who has recently been appointed as the president of Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, said a high-level probe should be conducted to find out the circumstances that led to the crime. Each and every fact related to the incident should be found out and all those found involved in the killing of Sambhu should be punished sternly as per law, he demanded.

He sought the intervention of Karimganj superintendent of police Padmanabh Baruah in this regard. He also demanded that adequate compensation be provided to the deceased’s family by the government.
