Silchar: Construction of footpaths under the Pakhi Path Nirman Yojana, initiated by the Assam Government during the 2023–24 fiscal year, has raised serious concerns among residents of Silchar’s Park Road area. The project, which began in February 2024, covers the stretch from the DIG Bungalow to the Annapurna Cinema Hall point.
From the very outset, locals have pointed out several irregularities in the work. The height of the footpaths on either side of the road has not been maintained uniformly. On the right side, certain sections have been built two feet high, while others measure only one foot.
This disparity has left residents struggling to access their own homes. Those facing the higher footpaths are unable to move their vehicles—bikes, scooters, or cars—inside their premises and are compelled to park on the roadside, contributing to mounting traffic congestion.
Adding to the inconvenience, slabs covering the drains below the footpaths remain incomplete in many areas, creating hurdles for pedestrians. Locals allege that this negligence has already resulted in accidents, with at least two pedestrians injured in recent weeks.
Despite repeated complaints lodged with the PWD office, residents claim that the construction work continues at a sluggish and irregular pace. “We are facing daily difficulties while entering or leaving our homes. If the situation continues, a major mishap could occur anytime,” said one resident.
With frustration growing among the public, there are mounting calls for the authorities to expedite and streamline the project before it leads to further accidents or escalates into a larger civic crisis.
