Bokajan Regional Committee of Assam Tea Tribe Students’ Association staged a huge protest demonstration (Dharna) before the Sub Divisional Officer’s office for three hours on Saturday to assert their remonstration against discrimination and bigotry of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council and Assam Government in the implementation of several governments sponsored schemes and projects in Tea Tribe dominated areas of the district.

Bokajan Regional Committee of Assam Tea Tribe Students’ Association president Rakesh Mahanando and Secretary Pintu Mahanando told the local media that the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council authority is continuously neglecting their community. The autonomous body has not implemented many Central and Assam Government subsidized schemes among their community.

Both the leaders alleged this attitude of the authority has augmented their intense poverty and has paved the way for all-round detriment. The Tea Tribe leaders also accused Assam Government of wholly ignoring their issues related to social and economic progress.

President Rakesh Mahanando and Secretary Pintu Mahanando stated that Tea Tribe workers and their families staying in Lahorijan and Nirmal Kumar Tea Estate bordering Nagaland are living under exceptionally awful circumstances.

The leaders alleged that the tea estate workers have been denied their provident fund benefits; primary education in absence of school, no medical assistance due to lack of any health care unit. The workers are given some amount of rice for their survival. The Adivasi communities living in that locality have been deprived of all assistance from the government schemes.

The Assam Tea Tribe Students’ Association has stipulated for the intervention of the Assam government and implementation of all Government subsidized welfare schemes specifically in Tea Tribe areas.

The Tea Tribe Students’ Association has cautioned the authority that if their demands are ignored they will intensify their agitation. The organization leaders submitted a memorandum to the Civil Sub Divisional Officer of Bokajan consisting of their demands and grievances.
