Guwahati: A bag containing foreign currency worth more than Rs.10.14 lakh was successfully recovered and returned to its rightful owner by the team at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) after it was left unattended at the airport earlier this week.

According to an official release issued on Tuesday, the incident took place on June 26 during routine security screening at Terminal 1 of the airport. Personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) detected an unattended bag at the Automated Tray Retrieval System (ATRS) and secured it in accordance with standard security procedures before handing it over to the airport’s Lost and Found team.

Upon inspection, the bag was found to contain US $10,720, 175 Chinese yuan, medicines and other personal belongings. Officials said the name written on the bag and medicine strips helped provide the first clue to the passenger’s identity.

After reviewing CCTV footage, the Lost and Found team confirmed that the passenger had already boarded a flight to Hyderabad. Working in coordination with the CISF and Hyderabad airport authorities, the team traced the passenger, verified ownership of the bag and returned it to an authorised representative.

Airport authorities said the incident highlighted the vigilance, professionalism and coordinated response of the security and airport teams in ensuring passenger safety and service.

Operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), LGBIA said it continues to focus on providing a safe and efficient travel experience. Following the inauguration of its new Terminal 2 in February 2026, the airport has further strengthened its role as the gateway to Northeast India.
