Mumbai: The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the Maharashtra Artificial Intelligence Policy 2026, setting an ambitious roadmap to attract over Rs 10,000 crore in investments and create around 1.5 lakh jobs by 2031.

The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The policy aims to position the state as a leading hub for artificial intelligence development, with a strong push on responsible and inclusive use of the technology.

As part of the plan, the government will establish a dedicated Maharashtra AI Mission. It also proposes to develop five AI innovation cities and six sector-specific Centres of Excellence to boost research, industry collaboration and practical deployment.

Officials said the policy places strong focus on skilling, with a target to train nearly two lakh youth and professionals in AI-related fields. The state also aims to align itself closely with the Centre’s India AI Mission and emerge as a key contributor to the national framework.

Structured around seven core pillars, the policy covers infrastructure, data ecosystems, skilling, innovation, startup support, sectoral deployment and governance. The government has kept room for updates to adapt to fast-changing technology trends.

Highlighting the urgency of the initiative, officials noted that nearly 70 per cent of existing jobs are likely to be reshaped by artificial intelligence in the coming years, making early investment in skills and systems critical.
