Imphal | Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh has condemned the killing of 17-year-old Naga youth NK Wiphenbou in Tamenglong district, calling it an act of violence that has no place in society.

Wiphenbou, a resident of Upper Takou village in the Tamei subdivision, was allegedly attacked while travelling alone towards Tamei on Monday morning. Police and local reports said the teenager was shot around 10:30 am between Upper Takou and Tamah (Malek). His body was later found by Naga village volunteers along a narrow path.

In a social media post, Khemchand condemned the killing and expressed condolences to the victim’s family.

“Such an act of violence against an innocent student has no place in our society,” the chief minister said, while praying for strength and comfort for the bereaved family.

The killing has drawn condemnation from political leaders and Naga representatives amid renewed tensions in parts of Manipur. Former chief minister N Biren Singh also called for those responsible to be brought to justice, while Naga People’s Front legislator and senior Naga leader Awangbou Newmai condemned the killing and described the attack as targeting an innocent civilian.

The identity of those responsible has not been officially established. Some Naga organisations and local sources have alleged the involvement of Kuki armed groups, but those allegations have not been independently verified.

The incident comes amid continuing violence between Naga and Kuki groups in parts of Manipur. Reports citing officials say more than 40 people have been killed since clashes between the two communities began in February.
