Imphal: The Manipur government has launched a large-scale security operation to track down those responsible for the deadly blast in Tronglaobi that killed two children early Tuesday morning.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced that the case will be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for a thorough probe. He condemned the attack in strong words, calling it an attempt by vested interests to disrupt peace in the state.
Speaking at a press conference at his official residence in Imphal, the Chief Minister said the perpetrators have not yet been identified. He confirmed that a massive combing operation is underway, involving state police, Assam Rifles, and CRPF personnel. Helicopters have also been deployed to aid the search.
A high-level security review meeting was held earlier in the day, attended by top officials from the Army, Assam Rifles, State Police, and CRPF. The Chief Minister directed all forces to intensify operations and ensure swift action against those behind the attack.
Appealing for calm, Singh urged citizens not to give in to panic or emotion and to cooperate with security forces to restore normalcy.
State Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh said such attacks are often carried out by elements seeking to derail improving conditions in the state. He added that, following the Chief Minister’s directive, state commandos have been redeployed in hill areas after a long gap, with bulletproof vehicles to strengthen operations.
In a related development, five people sustained bullet injuries after protesters attempted to storm a CRPF camp in Bishnupur district earlier in the day. Two of the injured later succumbed, while others suffered minor injuries.
The Chief Minister and the Home Minister also visited injured victims and their families at Raj Medicity.
Singh further expressed grief over the death of a minor girl at the Akampat relief camp and announced ex gratia along with all possible assistance to the affected families. He conveyed his condolences to all bereaved families, assuring them of government support during this difficult time.
