Imphal | Congress MP and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam on Sunday denied reports that 11 students had attended a private gathering at his residence, as allegations of sexual harassment against him remain under inquiry by the university.

Responding to reports aired by two national news channels, Akoijam said only two students from his home region, who were part of the last batch he taught, had visited his residence to help him with some work.

He said the students later had dinner with him, his wife and staff, and maintained that neither of the two had made any complaint against him. “These two are decent, sincere and gentle students, and I know them well,” Akoijam said.

The MP has previously rejected the allegations and criticised media coverage of the matter, objecting to what he described as a “media trial” based on unverified claims. Asked about the allegations and the ongoing proceedings, Akoijam said the facts would ultimately be established through due legal process.

“Court will find out. Just wait and watch,” he said.

The controversy follows complaints reportedly submitted by 11 JNU students against Akoijam. The allegations, which have not been established, reportedly relate to alleged inappropriate conduct and remarks during academic interactions, including viva examinations, as well as other interactions involving students.

The complaints have prompted an inquiry by JNU’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). Student groups have also called for a time-bound inquiry and raised questions over the handling of the proceedings.

The Delhi Commission for Women has sought details from JNU regarding the complaints and the action taken on them. JNU has maintained that the matter would be dealt with in accordance with applicable rules and statutory procedures, with the ICC conducting the inquiry.

The allegations remain subject to the ongoing institutional and legal processes.
