Meghalaya: Meghalaya has completed work on its first full-length feature film under the State’s Film Tourism Policy. The Telugu film Baa Baa Black Sheep wrapped a 25-day shooting schedule in the dramatic landscapes of Sohra, marking a milestone for the policy introduced to build a creative economy around cinema.
Directed by Guni Manchikanti and produced by Chitralayam Studios, the project engaged nearly two thousand local youth across departments. Tourism officials said this makes it one of the largest creative employment drives undertaken in the State so far and a strong sign of Meghalaya’s growing capacity to host major productions.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the film captures the State’s creative ambition and readiness for large-scale projects, adding that it reflects the wider goals of the Film Tourism Policy.
Producer Venu Donepudi praised the State’s support, noting that the schedule was completed at record pace. He confirmed that the film will be released in Khasi and invited the Chief Minister to attend the national premiere in Hyderabad.
The achievement fits within Meghalaya’s Vision 2032, which places tourism and the creative sector among the main drivers of its target ten-billion-dollar economy. The Film Tourism Policy 2025 aims to attract productions, strengthen cultural narratives, build skills, generate employment, and support film infrastructure across districts.
Incentives include subsidies of up to one crore rupees or 25 per cent of production costs for the first ten films, along with additional benefits for local talent, local-language projects, and premieres on Hello Meghalaya, the State’s official OTT platform.
The department noted that Hello Meghalaya has grown into a cultural platform of its own, recording more than 4.40 lakh downloads, over two crore views, and hosting more than 500 titles, including 83 feature films in Khasi, Garo, and Pnar.
As Baa Baa Black Sheep prepares for its national premiere, officials say the production highlights Meghalaya’s growing appeal to filmmakers and its push to promote local storytelling through multilingual releases, including its Khasi version.
