New Delhi: Millions of people living in Mumbai and Kolkata are at “immediate risk” of losing their homes due to rising sea levels and permanent inundation, according to a new United Nations report.

Released on Monday, the report warned that sea level rise is no longer a distant environmental threat. It has become a present and growing danger for communities in both developed and developing countries.

The report highlighted the increasing risks faced by coastal cities as rising sea levels threaten homes, infrastructure and livelihoods. Mumbai and Kolkata are among the major cities where millions of people could be affected by permanent flooding if sea levels continue to rise.

The United Nations stressed the need for urgent action to protect vulnerable communities and strengthen adaptation measures in coastal areas. The warning comes as climate change continues to accelerate sea level rise, increasing pressure on densely populated coastal regions around the world.
