After Violent Clashes Over Eviction Drive

KRC TIMES Assam Bureau

Chirang/Kokrajhar: The Government of Assam has suspended mobile internet and data services in Chirang and Kokrajhar districts following violent clashes triggered by an eviction drive along the India–Bhutan border.

According to an official notification issued by Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tewari, the suspension was imposed after unrest broke out in Chirang district during an eviction operation carried out by forest officials at Runikhata on April 16.

Officials said the situation escalated after 25 Adivasi individuals were detained during the drive, leading to protests that soon turned violent. Demonstrators allegedly clashed with forest personnel, set fire to government vehicles, and attempted to torch the Range Officer’s office.

Reports also indicated incidents of firing as security forces tried to bring the situation under control. Tension continues to prevail in the affected areas, with authorities closely monitoring the ground situation.

The suspension of mobile internet services has been enforced as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of misinformation and maintain public order.
